From Computer-Aided-Design to Cognitive-Augmented-Design

Monday July 4, 2022 at 12:00pm

Computer-Aided-Design has been paramount to the progression of technology throughout the past few centuries. Built on a feature based. parametric toolset, Computer-Aided-Design has enabled designers to create, modify and optimise designs and has been widely used to create most of the machinery, architecture, and household products we use daily.

As we continue the progression of Industry 4.0, the technologies we use will continue to develop, and Computer-Aided-Design is no exception. With the increasing need to innovate quicker, reduce costs and deliver products right-first time, there has been an uptake in the use of Cognitive-Augmented-Design throughout the design development process.

So, what is Cognitive-Augmented-Design?

Generative design has been around for a few years now, but it is very much still an evolving technology. In its simplest terms, generative design allows designers and engineers to create innovative solutions to design problems while addressing other factors such as weight and optimal use of materials.

Designers begin by entering all requirements, and constraints, the programme will then generate multiple optimised 3D models that fit each of these goals. This process allows designers to leverage the power of artificial intelligence to run through a range of design iterations that prioritise strength and durability while reducing material waste.

Cognitive-Augmented-Design falls under this umbrella of generative design, but goes a step further, incorporating a higher level of machine learning and automation to further optimise and refine designs.

What are the benefits of Cognitive-Augmented-Design?

  • Benefit from automation, simulation and an added layer of machine learning and A.I.
  • Optimise product weight and stiffness with lightweight engineering.
  • Reduce time and cost by evaluating concepts faster.
  • Rapidly produce multiple design iterations simultaneously.
  • Evaluate more design concepts while adhering to design specifications and requirements.
  • Leverage real editable geometry for both conventional and additive manufacturing.
  • Easily generate and simulate optimised concept shapes.
  • Manage collaboration between Design, Simulation and Manufacturing Engineers seamlessly.

How soon will Cognitive-Augmented-Design technology be available to designers and engineers?

The future is now. This technology is already available and many manufacturing companies are already taking advantage of the benefits. To discover whether Cognitive-Augmented-Design is the right next step for your business, get in touch with our Business Transformation team today.
