Replacing Components in Assemblies

Covered on the Assembly Modelling course, the Replace Component tool allows components with different file names to be swapped in and out without causing mate errors or the need to re-make areas of an assembly. Mates are re attached automatically, or if not they are re attached through one by one. Take this example vice assembly; my aim is to swap out the existing blue base with the new green one, perhaps due to a supplier change or modification to a part. Crucially, they are two separate documents.



To use the command, right click on the component to be replaced in the tree, and select “Replace Components from the drop-down list.

 

The command allows you to browse for the component that will replace it, crucially, I have the option “Re-attach mates” selected.

 

After clicking the green tick the component is swapped out. In this instance one mate on the end face has failed due to a design change, so I can use the thumbnail picture with the face highlighted to select the corresponding face on the new part.

 

After the end face is selected, I click the green tick again and then the process is complete, and the new component sits inside the assembly with no need to re-create or re-mate it.
